Build Huron Nursing Scholarship

The Build Huron Nursing Scholarships have been established to support nursing students who will attain a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Dakota Wesleyan University, and who agree to practice nursing at Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) or another healthcare facility in Huron, S.D. The scholarship is awarded on an annual basis. The scholarship is for yearly tuition except for $4,000, which is the responsibility of the student. The scholarship has been made possible and is being awarded by generous contributors within the Huron community and DWU. Scholarship distribution will begin upon entry to DWU and will continue until the final semester, not to exceed a period of four years.

  • Late/incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Eligible applicants will be put on a waiting list.

Scholarship Guidelines

  1. Apply and be accepted to the Dakota Wesleyan University.
  2. Recipients shall be a graduate of a South Dakota high school, or possess GED or homeschool certification, in the following order of preference:
    1. Graduate of a public or private high school, or GED or homeschool certificate holder in Beadle County or a resident of Beadle County.
    2. Graduate of a public or private high school, or GED or homeschool certificate holder in a neighboring county or a resident of the county.
    3. Graduate of other South Dakota public or private high school, or GED or homeschool certificate holder.
  3. An applicant must meet the admission requirements of the Arlene Gates Department of Nursing. Preference will be given to those with higher demonstrated academic achievement.
  4. Eligible recipients may include transfer students from another postsecondary educational institution meeting the graduation/certification requirements above.
  5. All awards shall be for one year and will be renewable for a maximum of four years if the recipient maintains satisfactory academic progress as defined by the DWU Arlene Gates Department of Nursing Handbook.
  6. Applicants will be required to complete an interview with the scholarship selection committee as part of the application process.
  7. Employment requirements: Recipient shall agree to practice as a nurse at HRMC or at a healthcare facility in Huron, S.D., for a period of five years upon successful attainment of a Bachelor of Science degree from DWU and upon passing the National Counsel Licensing Examination.
  8. Failure to complete the employment requirement will result in transformation of the scholarship to loan payable by the recipient to HRMC or another designated entity.
  9. The scholarship award will be distributed directly to DWU. Half (1/2) will be paid fall semester and half (1/2) will be paid spring semester.
