Paul Christen ’50, HD’70 was one of 11 individuals nationwide to receive the Boy Scouts of America’s Silver Buffalo Award in 2012.  The award, the organization’s highest commendation, was presented to Christen in July to honor his contributions and service to youth.  He has been involved with Scouting for more than 70 years, and he credits Scouting with preparing him to save his own life when he was involved in a serious plane crash in 1968.

Dorothy Cook Murray MH’51 is enjoying retired life.

Helen Peters Tippens ’54 writes, “a small world incident happened last Sunday (Oct. 7) at our Methodist church in the tiny town of Nehalem, Ore.  After I introduced myself to a guest from Hot Springs, S.D., Ruth Birrell ’67, we quickly learned we were both DWU graduates.  We were both English majors and had taken classes from Leonard Jennewein.  Ruth was in the area searching for the home of her grandfather, a retired Methodist minister.”

Bill Kalb ’56 has completed 55 years as a track coach.

Curtis Rolfe ’57 is working on the 17th stained glass window for a church in Lombard, Ill., and is completing a commission confirmation for three windows for a church in England.  He will begin work on 36 stained glass windows in Downers Grove, Ill., in January.

Roger Tanquist ’59 is organizing an Olympia, Wash., chapter of Heifer International.


Charlotte Nold ’64 has been a full-time pastor at St. John United Church of Christ in Chicago for 23 years.

Bob Roman Sr. ’64 has retired after teaching school for 48 years.  He has been with the CHAMP program at Rowan University in New Jersey for 30 years, helping inner-city students improve their SAT math scores.

Patricia Fenwick Snook ’64 recently purchased a townhouse in Rapid City, S.D., and volunteers at the Rapid City Regional Hospital and the Dahl Arts Center.

Donald Bowman ’67 serves as Miner County Commissioner.  He enjoys traveling in his RV and tries to attend all of his grandchildren’s school activities.

Mary Olinger ex’67 retired as president and chief executive officer of Make-A-Wish South Dakota.  She was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in September.

Sharyn Smith Martinson ex’67, Dianne Michel Stenroos ’67, Carol Ann Everett Dubois ’67, Gretchen Gross Dietzel ’67, Jan Britton Utsler ’67 and Valerie Hodsdon Knight ’67 got together July 20-22 in Burlington, Vt.  They toured Lake Champlain, visited Shelburne Museum and enjoyed reminiscing and spending time together.

Terry ’68 and Beverly Watkins Jorgenson ’64 are both retired and are enjoying time with their grandchildren.

John Sweet ’68 retired in June after 41 years in public education; he spent 35 years as a school superintendent and the last seven years at Delano, Minn., public schools.

Margaret Trask Waddell ’68 and her husband, Barry, have retired and are enjoying traveling with a fifth-wheel trailer and their two cats.

Bill Hennigar ex’69 has retired from teaching high school business and computer classes, and coaching cross country and track and field.  He retired from the Nebraska Army National Guard in 2008 as a helicopter pilot/maintenance officer after serving for 34 years.  He is a veteran of Vietnam, Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom.

Diane Olson McEntee MH’69 has retired from nursing after 39 years in a variety of areas: intensive care, critical care, pediatrics, labor and delivery, orthopedics, psychiatric, medical surgery, phone triage, office nursing and flight nursing.  She enjoys traveling, singing in the church choir, and volunteering for hospice and at the local hospital.


Jackie Stedronsky Fridley ’70 retired from teaching in May 2010 and is now working part time as a receptionist.

Neil Korth ’70 has recently completed his second assignment in Afghanistan as a U.S. Department of Defense civilian.  Both he and his wife, Kathy Cox Korth ’72, are now retired from federal civil service and reside in Bend, Ore.

Linda Martin Landauer ex’70 is retired from a 30-year career as a quality technician and quality engineer for circuit board manufacturing and assembly.  She is currently taking ministry preparation classes and has a local minister’s license in the Church of the Nazarene.

Kirk Davis ’73 is a member of the County Seat Theater Company at the Encore Performing Arts Center in Cloquet, Minn., the only theatre company representing the United States at the World Festival of Children’s Performing Arts in Toyama, Japan.  They will perform “Wiley and the Hairy Man.”  Davis plays the Hairy Man.

Darrell Aldrich ’74 retired as corrections director of social services.  His wife, Lisette Nelson Aldrich ’69, was elected Fond du Lac County Commissioner and plans to retire in 2013.  They are going to travel, relax and volunteer.

Dawn Bowen ’75 retired in June after 32 1/2 years as an Assistant United States Attorney.  She lives in Coral Gables, Fla., with her husband, Miguel Caridad.

Marsha Martin Johnson ’75 lives in Amarillo, Texas, where her husband is employed after retiring from 32 years in the U.S. Army.

Kassie Myers ’75 will retire in one year and will move to Oregon to be with her daughter and granddaughter.

Michael Wilson ’76 graduated first in his class from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, and he recently retired from his career in human resources.  He now is a part-time investor and lives in Minneapolis, where he celebrated 35 years with his partner.

Debbie Hettinger ’77 was a nominee for the Wisdom Keeper Award at Sanford Health’s Year of the Nurse All Aglow nurses’ event.

Toni Niewenhuis Stelle ex’79 has been employed with Delta Airlines for 30 years.  She has lived in northern Kentucky for the past 17 years.  She enjoys being outdoors and getting back to South Dakota to visit family.


Marcia DeBohr Heithoff ’80 is retired and will spend time traveling to see her nine grandchildren.

Jolene Bush ’81 was named Custer School District Teacher of the Year in 2012.

Heather Kaye ’82, of King George, Va., would like to say hello to everyone, especially to the Class of 1982.  If you are ever on the East Coast, you’re welcome to visit.

Bill ’82 and Linda Schoenrogge ’80 Meier are involved in building a new facility for the First United Methodist Church in St. Cloud, Minn., where Bill is the lead pastor.

Paul Nielson ’82 is a co-founder of Nielson Brothers Polling, which conducted surveys leading up to the 2012 general election.

Doris Hoy Brekhus ’86, her husband, Mark, and their daughters recently moved to South Dakota after being in California for 26 years.  They are eager to have their girls experience the good times of South Dakota and family in the Midwest.

Alan Miller ’86 now works for Wells Fargo Advisors.  He and his wife, Shelly Tjeerdsma Miller ex’86, live in Mitchell.

Robyn Simpson ex’88 is a counselor in private and public practice.


Chad Larson ’94 celebrated 15 years as graphic design specialist at Dakota Wesleyan University.  He has also served as the assistant boys’ tennis coach for Mitchell High School for eight years.

Tracy Saville Huska ’95 and her husband, Michael, moved to Bismarck, N.D., in July because she was promoted to continuous improvement specialist with Midland National Life.

Kardel Miller ’95 graduated from Lamar University last May with a Master of Education degree in administration.  He was hired as assistant principal of Sparks Elementary School in Frisco, Texas.

Sharon Broghammer ’98 was recognized as a Madison Who’s Who Featured Member.  She is employed at Walgreen’s and at the Abbott House in Mitchell.

Angie Schley Fast ’98 teaches fifth grade at James Valley Christian School.  Her husband, Jerrad Fast ’99, farms near Iroquois, S.D.


Amy Dimond McClaine ’01 is attending the University of Kansas and is in her second year of the Master of Social Work program.

Alison Mosel ’01 accepted a position at the University of Missouri in Columbia as an athletic trainer with the women’s basketball team.

Dan Nelson ’02 finished residency training in orthopedic surgery in Oklahoma City in June, and he moved to Nashville, Tenn., for a one-year fellowship in joint replacement training.

Becky Swanson ’04 began teaching math at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., in September.

Heidi Phinney ’07 is in her second year as a substitute teacher.


Jerome Nesheim ’96 and his wife, Melissa, welcomed a son, Alex Jerome, in September.  He joins his big sister, Kamryn, age 2.

Jill Hoffman Greenway ’02, ’05 and her husband, Clint, welcomed a son, Alex, in May.

Dan Nelson ’02 and his wife, Heather, welcomed a daughter, Samantha Riley, in May.

Chris ’05 and Kassie McManus Marek ’04 welcomed their third child, Rhoen Christopher, last March.

Tricia Kamps Gerlach ’06 and her husband, Matt, welcomed a girl, Lilly Eve, in August.

Clara Baker, of Mitchell, died Dec. 29, 2011.  She was a former assistant English professor at DWU.

Delia Huisinga, of Champlin, Minn., died Aug. 13, 2012.  She worked in the mail room at DWU from 1967 to 1973.

Ann Mitchell, of Mitchell, died July 20, 2012, at Monhegan Island, Maine.  Ann was a faculty member in the education department from 1973 to 2001 and was the wife of business professor, Dave Mitchell.  (See page 10.)

Sheila Ries, of White Lake, S.D., died Sept. 28, 2012.  She formerly worked in the admissions department at DWU.

Roy Rissky, of Mitchell, died Oct. 7, 2012.  He was a former physics instructor at DWU.
