2010-2011 Hall of Fame Inductees

Jason Bailey

Jason Bailey, a 1994 DWU graduate, is widely considered one of the best fullbacks to suit up for the Dakota Wesleyan football team. He was a four-year starter who helped the Tigers to their only perfect regular season and NAIA playoff appearance in 1992. Bailey is a three-time All-Conference pick and earned NAIA All-District honors as well as NAIA All-American Honorable Mention honors in 1993. He finished with 212 points and 3,135 rushing yards in his four-year career. Both marks were school records.


Victoria Drefs   Victoria Drefs, a 2004 graduate, played a key role during the Tiger women’s basketball team’s most successful stretch in history. She was a three-time All-GPAC First-Team selection and was named the league’s Defensive Player-of-the-Year in 2004. Drefs is one of four women in DWU basketball history to earn All-American honors, and she is third on the women’s basketball all-time scoring list. She also has the 12th-best career scoring average in DWU women’s basketball history and holds the school record for field-goal accuracy in a career.

Abbey DeWolf Mikkelson   Abbey DeWolf Mikkelsen, a 2005 DWU graduate, was instrumental in the beginning of the DWU women’s golf program and in paving the way for a very successful future for the program. She was a four-time All-GPAC performer and led the Tigers to three straight GPAC titles and back-to-back Region III titles. She led
her team to a 10th-place finish at nationals – the team’s highest finish – and was a part of the team that holds the school record for 18-hole team score. Mikkelsen was also a four-time All-GPAC selection in women’s basketball, is a member of the 1,000-point club and holds four school records.

Justin Portenier   Justin Portenier, a 2003 DWU graduate, holds the distinction of being the first and only DWU athlete to win a national title in any sport. He participated in three NAIA Wrestling National Championships and placed in the top five all three years, including a first-place finish at 125 pounds in 2002. He set 11 school records, including wins in a season and career, and still holds nine of those records. Portenier also finished in the top five at the region meet all four years, including wins in 2001 and 2002. He helped the Tigers to a 12th-place finish at the national meet in 2001 – DWU’s highest finish.

Jamey Sperle   Jamey Sperle, a 2003 DWU graduate, is one of the most decorated track and field athletes to compete at Dakota Wesleyan. He is a seven-time All-American who still holds eight individual school records and two relay records. He also still holds three conference records, as well as the fastest time ever run by a South Dakota college athlete in the indoor and outdoor 200-meter dash. Sperle was a two-time conference MVP and placed in the top four in all seven appearances at the NAIA National Meets. Also during his time at DWU, he qualified for the USA Track and Field Indoor National Championships in the 200 and placed 12th.

Betsy Bartels Tupper   Betsy Bartels Tupper, a 1996 graduate, was a two-sport athlete for the Tigers, and excelled at both. On the volleyball court, Tupper was a four-year starter and earned All-Conference accolades in each of her four seasons. She was a two-time NAIA All-District 12 pick, is the school’s leader in career assists and assists per game, and also holds two single-season records. On the softball field, she was a four-year starter and holds three single-season records.

Bob Zimmerman   Bob Zimmerman, a 1994 DWU graduate, is one of the top outfielders to ever wear a Tiger baseball uniform. He started all four years of his career in center field for DWU, and he was named the team’s MVP in 1993 and 1994. Zimmerman earned All-Conference First-Team honors in 1992, 1993 and 1994 and NAIA All-District honors in those same years. He set school records for batting average, RBIs and home runs that stood for almost 10 years.
