Servant Leadership

If public service has been a major part of your life and you are not sure what to major in, or if you already know you want to pursue a career in a service profession, Dakota Wesleyan University has several options for you.

Several of our majors leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree are ideal for those going into public service. A major in human services provides both the theory and practice of service professions, including hands on experiences in several classes as well as extended internship opportunities. The criminal justice major is ideal for those interested in the wide range of careers in law enforcement, corrections, and the judicial system. Criminal justice internships in the region span the wide range of opportunities and often become the site for a DWU graduate's first career position. Psychology is also a major that students choose as a stepping stone into a service profession, including the pursuit of graduate study.

The area of health care provides a myriad of career possibilities. Come to DWU and pursue a two-year associate degree in nursing that provides the education necessary to qualify as a registered nurse (RN). If you are seeking a Bachelor of Arts program in health care, there are also several options. The athletic training program at DWU is one of the very few accredited programs in the region, and one of the few in the entire nation that is located at a small, private university. Students at DWU can also pursue pre-professional programs in health care that prepare students for professional graduate programs after completion of a bachelor’s degree from DWU. Pre-professional programs at DWU include pre-med, pre-dentistry, and pre-physical therapy. Students in these pre-professional programs in health care often major in biology.

Students who love to serve young people should also consider education as a major. DWU has programs in K-12 education, physical education and special education. There is even a public elementary school on the DWU campus that provides extraordinary learning opportunities of DWU education students.

Beyond these specific majors, DWU also provides the Leadership and Public Service program. This innovative program allows students to incorporate service and leadership into virtually any course offered at DWU. In addition, you can create an individualized minor focused on service that includes an internship experience. DWU is also home to the new McGovern Center for Leadership and Public Service that holds major conferences each fall. Speakers at past conferences include former Senators Robert Dole and George McGovern, as well as national and international leaders in world service organizations, business, and politics.

Finally, there is wide range of co curricular service opportunities at Dakota Wesleyan University, many of which are associated with student organizations.
