Career Planning Assistance

The Center for Talent Development is here to guide you through each step of your career development, from choosing a major to your first day on the job. We focus on developing your skills as a professional and as a job seeker, empowering you to find the perfect match for your goals, skills and experience.

The following services are offered to all Dakota Wesleyan students for free, no matter your grade level or interest area. Stop by the Center for Talent Development with questions, and look for workshops, seminars and contests to learn more!

Graduate School
Should you go to graduate school? Once you’ve finished your undergraduate degree, pursuing an advanced degree may be an option you wish to pursue click here to find out more!

Transferable Skill Building
Did you know that history majors are often sought out for their impressive research and writing skills? Or that theatre majors make excellent presenters and sales representatives? All of those jobs you’ve held throughout high school and college, and all of your activities at DWU, have prepared you for the world after graduation. You may have many transferable skills you do not even see! The Center for Talent Development can help you determine and describe these skills in a way that will set you apart from other job seekers.

The numbers are clear: Students who participate in at least one internship have clearer career goals, find a job more quickly and are offered higher starting salaries than students who do not. Social Media Guidance
Is Facebook OK or not? Should I be on LinkedIn? Will be tweets help or hurt my job search? If the worlds of social media and professionalism have you confused, don’t sweat it! The Center for Talent Development can help you polish your profiles to attract employers and avoid being screened out of your dream job.

Building and maintaining your professional network online and off, is one of the single most important investments you can make for your career. For tips on how to network appropriately – even if you’re shy! – stop by the Center for Talent Development, or look for workshops on how to start, grow, maintain and use your network.

Internships, summer jobs, part-time jobs, service clubs, campus organizations, athletic teams, majors… where does it all go? When it’s time to put all of your experience down on one page, contact the Center for Talent Development to put together your basic résumé and customize it for each job you apply for.

Cover Letters
Also known as a “letter of interest,” your cover letter is your only shot at a personal message to the hiring manager reviewing your résumé. Which experience to highlight? How to appropriately mention the company’s mission statement? Who to address it to? The Center for Talent Development will help you answer these questions, empowering you to put your best message forward as you reach out to the professional world.

Mock Interviews
You sent in your résumé and cover letter, and now you’ve got an interview! Don’t panic – the Center for Talent Development is still here for you. From your professional wardrobe (ironing is not a joke), to your body language (uncross those arms!), to your actual answers, a mock interview is the perfect way to calm any pre-interview jitters and get professional feedback on the image you present.

Job Search
Whether it’s a part-time job between classes or your first career position, you want each experience to build on the last. Through our TigerLINK system, our partnership with the Department of Labor and Regulation, or career fairs, the Center for Talent Development has resources available for you to make the most of your career.
