Mitchell Area Children’s Choir Concert set for Friday
MITCHELL – The Mitchell Area Children’s Choir will perform its last concert of the year this week with solos by five area children.
The concert will be at 7 p.m., Friday, April 27, at the First United Methodist Church, Mitchell. There will be a free-will offering taken.
The choir, under direction of Erin Desmond, was formed a year ago and rehearses on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University. Desmond, a music teacher for Ethan School and wife to DWU choral director, Dr. Clint Desmond, said that she couldn’t be happier with how the year has gone.
“The year has gone great and I am looking forward to the choir’s second year of existence,” Desmond said. “When I created the group, I really didn’t know what kind of response I would get; but, we have just about 30 young singers that come together on Thursday nights to sing. There isn’t any other opportunity like this for miles.”
Young singers from Mitchell, Ethan, Parkston, Dimock, Salem, Tripp, Letcher, and even as far away as Kimball, participate.
Soloists for this concert include: Madeline Breidenbach, a fifth-grader from Mitchell; Julia Larson, fourth grade, Salem; Maci Kotrba, sixth grade, Mitchell; Tessa Yeo, sixth grade, Mitchell; and Kendra Klumb, eighth grade, Ethan.
The concert will be directed by Desmond and accompanied by Elizabeth Soladay. Some of the pieces to be performed include “What a Wonderful World,” “Riversong,” “Jubilate Deo,” “Corner of the Sky” and “When I Close My Eyes.”
Auditions for the fall of 2012 will take place the week of Aug. 27. Mitchell Area Children’s Choir accepts singers in third through eighth grade, performs three concerts a year and possibly will take a regional tour next year. For more information, contact Desmond at email@example.com.
