Spring Professional Excellence Award Winners named at DWU
MITCHELL — Terry Lundeen and Dr. Gloria Leonard are the winners of the Professional Excellence Awards for the spring quarter at Dakota Wesleyan University.
Dr. Gloria Leonard, professor of education and psychology, is the faculty winner and Terry Lundeen, director of residence life, is the winner of the staff award.
Leonard has been teaching in the education department since 1983, and retires this year.
“Gloria has devoted nearly three decades of her life to teaching at Dakota Wesleyan University,” states her nomination letter. “She has lovingly toiled over developing her travel classes and building relationships with diverse populations so that students could have real-world experiences in order to understand multiculturalism and human development.”
She has prepared multitudes of students for their careers over the years and still receives word from them, thanking her for the part she played.
“She is a friend and counselor to all,” the letter states. “Her joyful spirit is uplifting and causes one to stop and think about how life should be spent appreciating and enjoying family and friends. Her love of brainstorming with a group of people invigorates her thinking. She not only respects the opinions of others but is inspired by collaboration.”
Lundeen graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree from DWU in 2009 and a Master of Arts in education in 2010 before working full time for the college. He is praised for his problem-solving skills, his leadership and ability to build relationships with students and staff. He has taken initiative in multiple improvement projects throughout the dorm and “is working to consistently support both his staff and the students they serve,” as his nomination letter reads.
“He is a servant through and through, always stepping forward to take on tasks that have been pushed off. Students respect him and work well for him,” his letter states.
The Professional Excellence Award is given three times a year to a faculty and staff member. The winners are then considered for the year-end awards for faculty and staff.
Winners are given campus recognition and a gift certificate. The award recognizes employees for “outstanding service, for exemplary commitment to the university and for making a difference in the lives of students.”
The DWU Employee Recognition Committee selects the quarterly winners from nominations submitted by faculty, staff members and students.
