DWU dean to speak at California Baptist University

MITCHELL – Dr. Donald Simmons, dean of the college of Leadership and Public Service at Dakota Wesleyan University, will head west this month to discuss Christian leadership at a university in California.

He was chosen as the Metcalf School of Education-sponsored presenter for the annual fall faculty in-service at California Baptist University in Riverside.

Simmons, a nationally recognized author and speaker on leadership, will address California Baptist University faculty on Christian leadership in theory and practice. The presentation, “Teaching Leadership and Service at a Christian College,” will address the challenges and rewards of successful faculty teaching and research in institutions with a commitment to Christian ideals and a focus on leadership and service.

“One of the biggest challenges all Christians face, whether or not in a Christian or secular organization, is how to lead while working successfully in, and navigating, environments that sometimes run counter to their basic values and beliefs,” Simmons said. “The dean at CBU has asked me to help his faculty better prepare students for that challenge.”

California Baptist University is a private institution affiliated with the California Southern Baptist Convention that was founded in 1950. It has an average total undergraduate enrollment of less than 4,000 and was ranked among the top regional universities in the West by the US New and World Report (2012 edition).

“Dr. Simmons can help us better equip future leaders with the vision necessary to make the right things happen the right way,” said Dr. John Shoup, dean of the Metcalf School of Education at CBU.  “We are pleased to host someone of his stature on our campus.”

Simmons joined the DWU faculty in 2006 as the first full-time director of the McGovern Center and the founding chairman of the DWU Department of Leadership and Public Service. He now serves as the dean of the College of Leadership and Public Service. His publications include the college textbook “Leadership and Service: An Introduction” (Kendall/Hunt Publishers, 2008), which he co-edited with Sen. George McGovern and Dan Gaken of Central Michigan University. He also recently completed a co-edited book-length project on Christian leadership, which will be published in 2013.
