DWU’s Leah Miiller to display research at Posters on the Hill
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Council on Undergraduate Research) — Leah Miiller, of Dakota Wesleyan University, has been selected to present her research on Capitol Hill on April 24.
Miiller, of Corsica, and 73 other undergraduate students were chosen from 850 applicants to travel to Washington and meet with their Congressional representatives, as well as present their research at a formal poster session. Other activities include a reception and awards ceremony. Miiller is the first UGF Program participant to be selected for this honor since Yun (Winnie) Zhou of USD in 2009.
“This is a very high honor given to a very deserving student,” said Dr. Brian Patrick, assistant professor of biology at DWU. “The research opportunity though the SD BRIN program has opened a whole new world of possibilities for Leah, and she has embraced those possibilities. She has taken her very high academic ability and applied it to cutting edge research. The result is an outstanding body of research that will be seen and recognized at competitive and exclusive conference.”
Miiller’s mentor, Dr. Mick Watt of the University of South Dakota, was equally impressed.
“That was fantastic news to hear that Leah’s abstract was accepted, especially given the highly competitive nature of the program,” Watt said. “Given the dedication she showed to the project on which her abstract is based, along with the fact that she wants to continue this line of research in the lab this summer, she truly deserves this recognition and will do a great job of promoting the importance of undergraduate research.”
