DWU students to collect food for local Snackpack program
MITCHELL – Fighting world hunger can begin just around the block.
Two of Dakota Wesleyan’s student organizations, Universities Fighting World Hunger and Student Activities Board, are partnering with the local Mitchell Snackpack Program to collect food donations this weekend.
DWU students will begin collecting in teams at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, around the community.
“We will give the groups specific areas of town that they will cover so hopefully everyone in the community can contribute if they want to, and no one will be hit up twice,” said Breanna Clark, DWU junior and member of UFWH.
The weekend Snackpack Program began in October 2009 with a group of concerned people who saw a need and organized a committee to research such a project. With help from the Sioux Falls Backpack program and the Love Feast board, a pilot project was organized to begin in Mitchell from January through June in 2010. The program proved successful, and now DWU will lend a hand to fill bags with weekend food stuffs.
The bags are given to children in elementary schools on the last school day of the week. The program began with 125 children signed up. During the 2010-2011 school year, 260-280 bags were distributed weekly. For the first three months of the 2011-2012 school year, 349 bags have been packed weekly for Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary, Longfellow Elementary, LB Williams Elementary and John Paul II Elementary.
