DWU student’s art work on display at Pavilion

“Winter Winds” by DWU sophomore Joe Ford, Vermillion, is now on display in the University Invitational at the Visual Arts Center at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, along with 59 other students’ artwork. The exhibit is up through Feb. 17 with a closing reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. that day. The reception is free and open to the public.

MITCHELL – Finding the beauty in a harsh winter might sound contradictory to some, but Dakota Wesleyan sophomore Joe Ford turned last year’s frozen tundra into art.

Ford, a Vermillion native, is one of 60 students from 10 state colleges and universities whose art was chosen to be on display during the second bi-annual University Invitational at the Visual Arts Center at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls. The exhibit is up through Feb. 17 with a closing reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. that day. The reception is free and open to the public. This exhibition has been made possible by the generous support of Scott Christensen and David and Marsha Chicoine.

Photography isn’t new to Ford, who first picked up a camera when he was 13.

“The inspiration for this picture comes from two things,” Ford said, “First, even South Dakota can be stunningly beautiful in the winter if seen a certain way; and second, I thought ‘It is so dang cold outside and I have to do this project, so I want my photograph to portray how stinking cold it is!’ ”

Ford joins students from South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, Northern State University, Black Hills State University, University of Sioux Falls, Dakota Wesleyan University, Mount Marty College, Augustana College and Sinte Gleska.

To learn more about the exhibit please call the Washington Pavilion Box Office at (605) 367-6000 or go online to www.washingtonpavilion.org.
