MITCHELL – Two Dakota Wesleyan University nursing students were awarded special honors this spring at an annual convention, and a third was elected to office.

Twenty-four nursing students from the Mitchell campus and Huron site, along with their nursing faculty advisers, Carena Jarding, Kim Mohr and Janice Christensen, attended the Nursing Student Association of South Dakota (NSASD) convention in Brookings in late February.

Jackie Bau, of DeSmet, is a sophomore nursing student in the Huron nursing program and was one of two students who were awarded the title of South Dakota Outstanding Nursing Student for 2012.

Outstanding student nurse candidates are chosen by faculty and student peers in nursing schools across the state to compete at the state convention. The state award is based on a nursing student’s leadership ability, caring, ability to provide quality nursing care, accountability, and knowledge of current events.  A team of five judges read candidate essays, reviewed references and interviewed each nursing student.  Along with Bau, Heidi Berg, a sophomore nursing student, was an outstanding student nurse candidate who represented the Mitchell campus.

Also, during the NSASD convention, Tiffany Hogen, an A.A. nursing student from Mitchell, won the Naoma Jackson Nursing Student Leadership and Action Award, which is given in memory of Naoma Jackson, a nursing student who was fatally injured while a student nurse. Hogen entered a 500 word essay that garnered her the award which is given to a nursing student who has strong leadership and educational goals and is dedicated to overcoming obstacles in order to become a nurse.

Jonilyn Rinehart, of Freeman, is a freshmen nursing student at the Mitchell campus, and was elected NSASD state treasurer for the 2012-2013 academic year, and the DWU Mitchell nursing students proposed a resolution on sports-related concussions that will be advanced to the National Student Nurses Association.
