DWU to host regional science fair

MITCHELL – Dakota Wesleyan University will host the 20th annual South Central South Dakota Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Tuesday, March 20, in the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center.

The competition includes students in grades six through 12, from 19 schools in 18 South Dakota counties. Projects will be on display for viewing by the public from 2 to 5 p.m.

Students participating in this regional event will bring projects that have already won in science fairs at local schools. This year’s fair includes 153 projects produced by 263 students.

“We broke a 15-year winning streak at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) last year but the truth is that the quality of our local fairs has never been higher,” said Dr. Mike Farney, DWU professor of mathematics and science fair director. “I’m especially proud of what I saw this year at Lake Andes, White Lake and Plankinton. As a result, this year’s possible contenders at the ISEF will be strong indeed. Some students have found new uses for computers – especially for microchips in cars. And speaking of cars, cellulosic ethanol is also being investigated.

“At a more down-to-earth level we may see a number of projects on soil. These are highly practical and so is another topic that caught our students’ attentions this year: ‘can you detect liars?’ That would seem appropriate for an election year.  Can’t decide who to vote for?  You could flip a coin but be careful; I recently saw a project called, ‘Will Spinning A Penny Rather Than Tossing It Change The Odds?’  It actually does!”

More than 64 judges will select the winners; three projects will advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair May 13-18 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Awards to be given to participating students include cash, certificates, college scholarships, including $10,000 to the senior grand award winners, plaques, medals, trophies, major industry recognition, and recognition by the U.S. Armed Forces.

In addition to DWU, sponsors include The Daily Republic, Your Touchtone Energy Cooperatives, Sixth District Medical Society, Twin City Fan Companies, LTD., and Logan Luxury Theatre.
