Homecoming Hymn Festival open to all

MITCHELL — Dakota Wesleyan University’s music department invites the community to attend its Homecoming Hymn Festival – an event to wrap up the college’s Blue & White Days weekend.

DWU’s Blue & White Days is set for Saturday, Oct. 6, with the parade at 10:30 a.m. on Main Street, followed by the football game at 1 p.m. For a full list of events for homecoming weekend, visit www.dwu.edu/alumni/homecoming/.

The festivities close Sunday, Oct. 7, with a Homecoming Hymn Festival at 5 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with all the DWU and DWU/community choral ensembles, Wesleyan Bells, and a special brass ensemble. This concert is free and open to the public.

“It will be a traditional hymn sing with four large choral arrangements of familiar hymns that will incorporate brass, timpani, the combined choirs and congregational participation,” said Clint Desmond, DWU choral director.

Each choral ensemble will also sing one or two sacred pieces on their own. The music ranges from spirituals and psalm settings, to English anthems and hymn concertatos.

“I feel, with the once-proud music tradition that was here at DWU and the growing pride in our current program, alumni who were active in the arts need a place to return when they come back to campus,” Desmond said.
