DWU to host evening vespers this semester
MITCHELL — Dakota Wesleyan University will partner with the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, of Sioux Falls, to present an evening vespers service on the campus twice more this semester.
The college hosted one service in October and will have its next services at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8, and Dec. 6, in the Wagner Chapel in the Rollins Campus Center. The services are open to all.
“Vespers is the first service of the daily cycle of divine liturgy celebrated by the Orthodox Church. Because the liturgical day begins at sunset, it is traditionally observed in the early evening but considered the start of a new day,” said Dr. Joel Allen, assistant religion professor at DWU.
After each service the officiating priest will spend a few minutes explaining Orthodox worship to all who wish to stay.
