DWU announces new dean of College of Leadership, Public Service

MITCHELL — Jesse Weins, assistant professor of criminal justice, was promoted to dean of the College of Leadership and Public Service during an announcement made today by DWU Provost and Executive Vice President Amy Novak. Weins will replace the former dean, Dr. Donald Simmons, who announced his resignation earlier this academic year.

“Professor Weins presents himself with quiet modesty, but his administrative thoughtfulness, his commitment to academic rigor, and his scholarly ambition have established him at the university. Further, his exceptional research has garnered recognition regionally and internationally,” Novak said. “His work has drawn attention from The New York Times, USA Today and our own state’s legislature. Dakota Wesleyan is proud of him as one of our alumni and also as a member of our staff for the past five years. We’re excited he has accepted this position.”

Weins earned his bachelor’s degree from DWU in 2003 and graduated with distinction in 2007 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law, where he served as an executive editor of the Nebraska Law Review and a symposium issue editor of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy.

Weins returned to Dakota Wesleyan in 2008 to lead the criminal justice department.

His work has appeared in the Tennessee Law Review, the Nebraska Law Review and the Journal of Medicine & Law, and has been recognized by a U.S. federal district court, USA Today and The New York Times.

He is married with three children and resides in Mitchell.

Nearly four years ago, Dakota Wesleyan announced it would reorganize its majors into a three-college system, dedicating each college during the convocation ceremony in 2009. Dr. Rocky VonEye serves as the dean of the Donna Starr Christen College of Healthcare, Fitness and Sciences, and Dr. Vince Redder is the dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. Recently, Dr. Ed Plastow also joined the faculty as dean of Graduate Studies.
