Presidential Scholarship Day cancelled at DWU due to weather
MITCHELL — Dakota Wesleyan University has cancelled its Presidential Scholarship Day scheduled for Friday, Feb. 22, due to impending weather.
Mitchell is expected to receive 2 to 5 inches of snow throughout Thursday, and as of Wednesday the majority of the state was listed in a winter weather advisory.
“We made the decision to cancel the scholarship day because so many of the students who would be attending are driving in from out of town, and would do much of that driving Thursday – when the weather is supposed to be the worst. We decided to cancel the event since it would be unsafe for those students to be on the road,” said Missy Herr-Valburg, director of admissions at DWU.
The Presidential Scholarship Day will not be rescheduled.
More than 75 percent of the students who were planning to attend the scholarship day on Friday have already committed to attending Wesleyan this fall, Herr-Valburg said. A detailed list of awards and recipients will be released later this week, but originally 35 students and their families were intending to arrive on campus to receive their awards, meet professors and take a tour. The Presidential Scholarship Day luncheon is set annually to welcome prospective students who have applied for and been awarded various scholarships to Dakota Wesleyan.
DWU also held Randall Scholarship Day earlier in the month – which is a competitive scholarship day with interviews. Those recipients were named and a full list may be found here: www.dwu.edu/press/2013/feb12.htm.
DWU is a private, liberal arts university associated with the Dakotas Conference of the United Methodist Church. For more information about Dakota Wesleyan University, visit www.dwu.edu.
