DWU’s spring musical, ‘Xanadu’ begins rehearsals

MITCHELL — Things are about to get groovier at Dakota Wesleyan.

Rehearsals for DWU’s spring musical, “Xanadu,” are underway with a stellar cast.

The musical comedy of “Xanadu” follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, Calif., in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first roller disco. But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos abounds.

“Xanadu” will be performed at 7:30 p.m., March 15-16, and March 22-23; and at 2 p.m. on March 17 and 24, in the Patten-Wing Theatre within Hughes Hall on campus. General admission will be $10 and tickets will go on sale two weeks prior to the first performance.
Audiences may recognize the original hit score composed by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, including, “Magic,” “All Over The World,” “Suddenly,” “I’m Alive,” “Evil Woman,” “Have You Never Been Mellow” and “Xanadu,” to name a few, and the musical based on the Universal Picture’' cult classic movie of the same title, which starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly.

DWU’s version will bring to stage a cast of recognizable faces, including Jenna Callies, Mitchell, who will be recognized from Area Community Theatre’s “Footloose,” and DWU’s “Damn Yankees.” Alex Smith also comes back to center stage as Sonny – audiences will remember him as Joseph from DWU’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”
