Mixed Blood Theatres to present ‘African America’ at DWU

MITCHELL, S.D. — Dakota Wesleyan’s Multicultural Committee and TRiO Student Support Services will host The Mixed Blood Theatre’s “African America,” by Warren C. Bowles, on campus at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, in East Main Dining Room. The event is free and open to the public.

“African America” is set in Minnesota and begins with the surprising appearance of a charming, magical African who leads an interracial couple to a better understanding and appreciation of the experience of immigrants to Minnesota from Liberia, Ethiopia and Somalia. He then helps them consider how to connect with and celebrate their own heritage.

The cast features Hope Cervantes, Gavin Lawrence and Skyler Nowinski. “African America”is one of four culturally-specific productions toured this season by Mixed Blood, a professional, multiracial theatre company based in Minneapolis that promotes cultural pluralism and individual equality through artistic excellence.

In continuation of Black History Month, DWU’s Multicultural Committee, Student Activities Board and student life department will bring the Dynamic Duo to campus. Tackling politics, video games, depression, racism and relationships, the Dynamic Duo infuses energy, comedy and emotion into its raw poetry. Panama Soweto and Ken Arkind have brought their show to both coasts and will be at Dakota Wesleyan at 9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Sherman Center. The event is free and open to the public.
